Dr. Loosen Red Slate Dry Riesling
Dr. Loosen’s Red Slate is a warm yet refreshing and lively Riesling from the Dr. Loosen estate in Mosel, Germany’s oldest and third largest wine region. The term ‘Red Slate’ acknowledges the red slate soil in which the grapes are grown at the estate-owned vineyards in the villages of Erden and Ürzig.
The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 3000 litre neutral oak casks for 12 months. This process alleviates the acidity and allows a small amount of oxygenation to occur which brings a sense of complexity to the wine.
The estate is a member of the VDP (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), Germany’s highly prestigious association of top-rated wine estates and owner Ernst Loosen himself has one a long list of awards including ‘Winemaker of the Year’ back in 2001.
Ernst Loosen was born into the world of wine. The estate had belonged to his family for 200 years but when he took over in 1988, he made it his mission to create truly distinctive and world-class wines. He recognised potential that his predecessors hadn’t. When other winemakers were cutting back and concentrating on a higher yield, Ernst Loosen was on quality as he endeavored to create unique and outstanding wines that are true to their heritage.
